The unknowing coeliac

19 Aug 2014

Did you know that there are half a million people suffering from Coeliac’s Disease in our country – without even knowing it?

The University of Nottingham conducted research that discovered only 24% of coeliacs are even diagnosed – which could lead to a whole host of other medical problems.

You may know Coeliac’s disease by another name – gluten intolerance. Gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, exists in any food that contains them – so bread, pasta, cereals, cakes, and so on. Fortunately, it is becoming easier to find gluten-free foods in supermarkets, especially as more and more people are diagnosed and the demand grows.

Symptoms of gluten intolerance, and their severity, can vary from person to person. They can include, among other things:

  • Diarrhoea, constipation or excessive wind
  • Random gastrointestinal symptoms – nausea, vomiting etc.
  • Stomach pain, cramping or bloating
  • Tiredness/headaches
  • Hair loss
  • Mouth ulcers and skin rashes
  • Osteoporosis or joint/bone pain
  • Depression
  • Infertility or repeated miscarriages
